Challenging Nicotine Cleaning

4/12/2022 (Permalink)

Refrigerator with heavy nicotine residue partially cleaned to show the difference from cleaned and not cleaned. As you can see, the nicotine residue in this property was heavy, but was no match for SERVPRO's cleaning methods and products.

When it comes to cleaning smoke, soot, dirt, dust, debris, mold or construction dust, no two projects are the same. Each project has different levels of difficulty and require different gameplans to return a property to "preloss condition." One type of cleaning that has a tendency to be challenging is nicotine residue.

Our team recently performed professional cleaning services at a local residential property which required a thorough top-to-bottom restoration. The debris and residue were primarily caused by years of nicotine buildup. Our specially formulated products, proven cleaning methods, and some good old-fashioned elbow grease, eliminated the odor and residue that had contaminated the property.

We're proud of the way this project turned out and look forward to the next challenge we may encounter. SERVPRO of Cheshire County: Working hard to make all types of damage "Like it never even happened."

The Dangers of Hoarding

A photo of a living room filled with stuff A living room that is completely filled with miscellaneous items as a result of hoarding.

Each hoarding case that SERVPRO deals with is very different. SERVPRO is usually called to a fire damage or water loss job, only to realize it is also a hoarding situation. Once approval is granted by the insurance company, SERVPRO professionals can pack the contents and possibly clean, dry or store them so they can begin work on the fire or water loss. Another way that a SERVPRO franchise may find themselves at a hoarding job is through a landlord, a case works, real estate agents, or family members often after the death of a loved one. Many people with a hoarding disorder do not think that their way of living is a problem, they typically hoard items that others would think of as trash or junk. Years of clutter and accumulation can result in unsanitary living conditions, sometimes resulting in bugs, fleas, and even rats. No matter how severe the hoarding case, SERVPRO will leave it “Like is never even happened.”

What's Lurking in Your Ducts?

4/6/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your home or facility should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home. Over time, different contaminants or foreign objects can enter and collect in your air ducts that may diminish the indoor air quality of your home or office or cause other damages to your HVAC system.

A routine part of your local SERVPRO Franchise Professional's repertoire is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). By keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean you can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which in turn may help you save money. Similarly, duct cleaning may not always be necessary. Your local SERVPRO Franchise Professionals are trained on how to properly inspect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This simple inspection can help save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

Below you will find the steps to the SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System an industry leading and cost efficient method:

  • Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, your SERVPRO Franchise uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.
  • First, our technicians use a roto scraper which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct in order to remove debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16 gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • Sealant or coating may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns and filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

Spring Cleaning Your Workspace

  • Divide Your Workspace Into Zones:

Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.

  • Keep Only What You Need At Arms Length:

Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you’ve established for them.

  • Sort Your Catch-All Drawer:

Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn’t being used.

  • Eliminate Digital Clutter:

Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Organize digital files and your e-mail inbox just as you would paper files–with a system of logical and clearly labeled folders. Also, keep the icons on your desktop to a bare minimum, and trade in sticky notes on your monitor for calendar reminders.

  • Create A Daily Paper System:

Consider creating hanging files or baskets labeled “To Read,” “To Do,” and “To File.” Establish set days for each, so that you don’t get behind or feel the overwhelming need to do everything at once.

  • Disinfect Regularly:

Prevent the buildup of dust, dirt, food stains and fi ngerprints. Wipe down your desk, phone, keyboard and monitor once a week with disinfecting wipes.
